The Sam in Sambezi
My mother walked down the Batoka gorge to watch my dad kayak when she was 8 month pregnant with me. Perhaps the Zambezi was racing through my veins before I was even born! I grew up in Victoria Falls during the pioneer days of white water rafting, kayaking and Adrenalin activities. Dad taught me to kayak almost before I could swim and I took my first terrifying roll in the Zambezi aged 10 and the nickname Sambezi was born. My family started their own Rafting and Canoeing company in 1990 which then went on to became Wild Horizons and maintains the majority of the Zimbabwean Rafting market today. As a young boy I watched them build the now renowned Lookout gorge swing. Passionate about tourism and addicted to adrenaline dad bravely poured all their funds into the Zimbabwean rock of Batoka Gorge as the country fell into economic and political turmoil around them in 2000. The rafting and kayaking community migrated temporarily across the River to Zambia. Foreign raft guides and kayakers settled there. Zimbabwean National Parks tightened its regulations to support local employment, conservation and protect its wildlife and pristine riverbank. While tourists soon returned to the compact infrastructure of the Zimbabwean side, Zambia became synonymous for kayaking. For years I wished international kayakers could gain more access on the Zimbabwean side and began working to make this happen. Out of kayak season my craving for Adrenalin, love for nature and passion to protect the environment has led me into a career in the Renewable Energy Industry. The job keeps me suspended on ropes, above the clouds working on wind turbine blades. It has taken me around the world , off shore and to spectacular rivers to kayak but Africa is in my blood and I am always drawn back to the Zambezi.
